In a recent Tweet, an Allure Beauty Director said she was “MENTAL” for Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils 15 Year Anniversary Collection. Pencils sending seasoned beauty directors into a frenzy?!? They must be pretty damn special. And today, The Beauty Bug learned just how special they are from Urban Decay’s national makeup artist, Cole Martin. A self-described guidette, Martin is a firecracker. Wearing 2 pairs of lashes stacked upon each other, and gorgeous blue smoky shadows with just the right amount of glitter peaking through, her love for her artistry and the brand oozed from within.
The limited edition set, which is currently exclusive to Sephora, celebrates the brand’s fifteen year anniversary. For The Beauty Bug, it was love at first eye liner wing. The pencils are smooth and abide by the 40 second rule – you have 40 seconds to smudge, schmear, or smoke until the liner sets.
BB: Can you talk a little bit about the anniversary event today and the product?
CM: We’re here today celebrating Urban Decay’s 15 year anniversary and our very special partnership we have with Sephora (they were UD’s first retailer). To commemorate the occasion, we’ve launched this exclusive 24/7 Glide Liner set that is TO DIE FOR. They are our top-selling liners that don’t budge and are water resistant. The set contains our top 9 liners, coupled with 6 new exclusive shades. I’m currently obsessed with Midnight Cowboy, Corrupt (rich chocolate with copper undertone) and Perversion (an absolute stark black). They are just fabulous. The set is exclusive to Sephora for now, but in February they’ll hit the other retailers.
BB: Can you give us a sneak peak as to what Urban Decay has up its sleeves for 2011? Any new products?
CM: Blush, blush and more blush – and lashes! 2011 will be about blush and lashes! Today I have on 2 pair of lashes stacked. They all come with a latex-free adhesive and are super easy to put on, and can be used over and over again. Also, all throughout the entire year, we’ll be celebrating our anniversary, so it’s not just this month. In between our usual spring, summer, fall and holiday launches, we’ll be launching new fun and exciting products.
BB: What are your 3 must-have products that should be in everyone’s makeup bag?
CM: Number one would have to be our eye shadow primer. Everyone must own it. It’s just off the richter scale – number one primer in the world. Number two, would be our 24/7 Glide liner in Perversion (only available in the anniversary set). An application tip that I have tell everyone is to take it and work it right into the lash line, tapping the base of the lash so it accentuates the lashes, making them look longer. Number three, would be our new Lip Junkie (editor’s note: the Midnight Cowboy Lip Junkie, combined with the Wallflower 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil, make THE perfect nude lip). They have this amazing peppermint/vanilla flavor and contain Maxi-Lip technology for plumping action. And there’s SO many shades, so you can choose the perfect one for you.
BB: I’ve been searching high and low, in multiple Sephora locations, for the Urbanglow Cream Highlighter. Still haven’t been able to see it in person. It is the next Naked Palette?
CM: You have to have it. It’s so beautiful and amazing. Unfortunately, they don’t carry it in Sephora stores, but you can get it online. The best part about product is that you can layer it over powder. I love my Surreal Skin Mineral Powder Foundation that has a matte finish and what’s so great about the highlighter is that you can put in right on top of the powder, and because it’s so creamy the powder doesn’t separate. I pat it along the cheekbone, the bridge of the bone, in the inner corner of the eye or on the brow bone as a highlighter.
BB: Speaking of the Naked Palette, can you give us an update? Can you talk a little bit about the hysteria?
CM: It’s like the Tickle Me Elmo of cosmetics! We could not keep it in stock. The waiting lists were pages and pages and pages long. Our shadows are all made in-house, but our packaging is made by outside vendors and they couldn’t keep up with the demand! But this year we’re prepared for it and it will be back in stores in February. It’s the best palette in the world with a great range of color for the natural,to the gold to the smoky eye, with the brown and the black liner. I like the fact that there’s matte in it too!
BB: Picks for best every day eye shadows?
CM: Illegal (matte smoky rose)- I use it almost every day. It’s the perfect crease color because it can be coupled with any shimmer we have. It’s still in the earth tones, but not as basic as brown. Another 2 shadows that I love are Woodstock (editor’s note: Woodstock, a shimmering magenta, isn’t classified as an everyday shadow, although it did provide a little extra punch to The Beauty Bug’s smoky eye) and Free Love (a peachy shimmer), which are exclusive to Sephora.
Thanks to Cole Martin and the Urban Decay team!
