The Beauty Bug is back, and it feels good! She’s excited to share her 4th annual Best of Beauty interview with Allure Beauty Director, Amy Keller Laird. Tried, tested and true, the editors slathered, swatched, and sprayed until they uncovered the 193 best products available. Some sported uneven, multi-colored tans, while another borrowed a SUV just to be able to manage and stockpile the product load. From an instant whitening toothpaste with a blue tinge, to an advanced skin lightening system that she is “especially stoked about”, here’s what Amy had to say about this year’s Best of Beauty Awards.

BB: Can you talk about the awards in general this year (how/if they were different from years past, how many products you received, if there were any surprises, new categories, etc.)?

AKL: This year was especially exciting because it is the 15th anniversary of the Best of Beauty awards-not to mention we had Karlie Kloss, the hottest model of the moment, as the star of the photos in the magazine (have you seen her on the runway? For lack of a better word, she is so fierce). We received thousands of nominations, but we also take into consideration products that haven’t been submitted but that we’ve tested throughout the year. Every year we reevaluate our categories in case we need to add something timely or omit something that’s no longer relevant. This year, we did add a number of new categories:

* For skin, we added “Instant Brightener.” This went to Clarins Beauty Flash Balm because so many of us (along with models backstage) use it to refresh the look of the skin immediately.

* For Eye Cream , we added “Moisturizing” as a category. Previously we’d had “Dark Circles,” “Anti-Wrinkle,” and “Depuffing,” and we thought, well, a lot of women simply want to add moisture to dry undereyes. It was one of those “duh, we-need-this” categories.

* For Foundation, we added “Best Shade Range.”

* For Shampoo and Conditioner, we added “Frizzy and/or Curly Hair” as a category, because it’s a question we get a lot from friends and readers-what do I do in the shower for my frizzy hair, my curly hair?

* In the Straightener category under Hair Styling Products, we awarded two products: one temporary, traditional straightener, and then the John Frieda Frizz-Ease 3-Day Straight Semi-Permanent Styling Spray. We wanted to reflect this new type of product that’s hit the market-hair products
that claim to keep your hair perfectly straight for several days without a salon blowout. In our experience, the John Frieda one actually lasts four days.

* For Scent, we brought back “Room Fragrance.” We decide every year whether we want to include this category-it really depends if there’s a standout product that warrants it. And the Cire Trudon Room Spray in Abd el Kader that won this year certainly does-the ribbed, old-world, atomizer bottle is absolutely gorgeous and special, as is the fresh scent inside.

* For Body Bronzer, we added a “Temporary” category to go along with traditional and gradual self-tanners.

* We also tweaked a few category names to make it easier for women to know if they fit into that category. For example, “oil-free foundation” became “for oily or acne-prone skin.”

BB: When it comes to the Big Breakthroughs, the issue always takes one product to the next level. A few years ago it was No Frizz. What do you think that product will be this year? Which product impressed you the most?

AKL: My vote is for the Elure Advanced Skin Lightening line. In the past, products that fought dark spots and discoloration did so by blocking the production of melanin deep within the skin-a process that takes 12 to 16 weeks to see results. What the Elure products do is attack melanin right on the surface of the skin by breaking it down into small, colorless molecules that are removed with normal exfoliation. A top dermatologist told us her patients have been seeing their hyperpigmentation fade within four weeks using Elure. The company has great science and good clinical studies, so it stands up on a professional level. On a personal level, I have a bigger issue with dark patches than wrinkles, so I’m especially stoked about using this.

BB: Grady (Amy’s husband) is always testing products with you. Any shared favorites this year that you’ll be fighting over?

AKL: Um, he may not want me sharing this with the public but here goes anyway: He loves the Dr Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pads, which won for “Facial Self-tanner.” These towelettes exfoliate as they deposit a subtle bronze color. By the time I can even get to the box to use one, he’s already emptied it!

BB: What’s the max number of products you had in your bathroom and shower at once?

AKL: I didn’t do an exact count this year, but my guess is somewhere in the 50s or 60s. If you added in the makeup on my vanity, that’s another 20 or so products. And if you also counted the products sitting in bags in my living room waiting to be tested, that’s another 20 to 40 products at any given time during the testing process.

BB: Top Splurges – if someone wanted to spring for just one, what would you recommend?

AKL: The Clarisonic-it’s $195 but truly worth it. Tons of Allure editors swear by it for keeping their skin glowing and soft, and dermatologists are also big fans-they recommend it all the time.

BB: If The Beauty Bug’s memory serves her right, you’re a big fan of Giorgio Armani foundation, but that didn’t make the cut this year. The foundation buck has been passed on to MAC and Chanel. How do the newly crowned foundations measure up?

AKL: Good memory! I do love Armani’s foundations-that hasn’t changed-but every year we have new favorites that come into play. For example, the Chanel foundation that won in the “Light Coverage” category is really a game-changer: It’s a completely different type of formula. It’s in a shaker bottle-the formula is very thin and fluid, but it’s not streaky and somehow still manages to cover flaws but feel invisible. The M.A.C. Studio Sculpt Foundation that won the “Medium to Full Coverage” category has a nice satin finish and simply does not budge-it’s used a lot backstage at fashion shows for these reasons.

BB: Any behind-the-scenes stories you can share? Editors going to extreme lengths to lobby for their favorites? Stories of Twit pics of bathrooms being overtaken by products? Stories of testing gone bad?

AKL: A few times a week for a couple months I took pictures of the row of products I planned to try that day and posted them on Twitter-it was always a mix of hair, skin, and body products plus makeup. People would tweet back in support of their favorite brands they saw in the photos. There were so many products to test, one editor drove a friend’s SUV into the city, packed it with products, then unloaded everything into her apartment. Another filled her tub with bags of products that she went through systematically. There were days we wore different mascaras on each eye, and more than one root volumizer in our hair-in different places-so we could compare the results. And one editor was four different degrees of tan at one point since she’d tried four formulas on her arms, legs, and chest. As for testing-gone-bad, my assistant now has a scar on the back of her leg from trying a too-sharp razor, which she considers a proud “battle
wound” from Best of Beauty!

BB: Any new or indie brands that you’ve discovered through the awards?

AKL: I’d heard of the line Jouer before and tried a couple of their products, but I wasn’t familiar with their tinted moisturizer until Best of Beauty testing this year. Wow-it is fabulous. It’s really hydrating, doesn’t collect around your nose or mouth, and gives you a soft glow without being greasy.

BB: When does testing begin for the 2012 awards?

AKA: February 2012

Here’s what they are gushing about:

“There are so many incredible beauty innovations on tap for 2011, it’s going to be a gorgeous year! I’m especially excited for Crest’s new 2-Hour Express Whitestrips. Can you imagine — a sparkling smile in just one 2 hour session? I usually use regular Whitestrips for maintenance, applying one every month or so, but with the new 2-Hour technology, I’ll be good for a year! I’m also thrilled about John Frieda’s 3-Day Straight Potion, which helps hair retain the shape you style via heat. I prefer a sexy, wavy style, which I lock in using a curling iron after applying 3-Day Straight — I wake up with “done” hair for up to a week! Amazing. For makeup, I’m psyched for two new launches. First, I’m obsessed with Shiseido’s Refining Makeup. It’s a foundation that creates the look of perfect skin. You only need to use a tiny bit to even out skin tone and the texture is a perfect satin, you don’t need to use powder ever. Also loving Chanel Rouge Coco Shine lipsticks – which feel like a heavenly lip balm going on but deliver gorgeous pigment in cool shades like sheer tomato red and shimmering plum. Plus, they have adorable names inspired by the life of young Coco Chanel and of course come in the chicest tube. ” -Gwen Flamberg, Beauty Director, US Weekly

–

“John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Controlled Lightening Spray - This mist lightens your hair with just a low level of peroxide–it’s kind of like a technologically advanced version of putting lemon juice on your hair in the summer. I plan on using it on my ends to keep them lighter than the rest of my hair.

Yves Saint Laurent Cream Blushes in 5 and 6: I love cream blushes because they create the most natural-looking flush. And these sheer bubblegum-pink and red blushes are amazingly gorgeous. They give your cheeks a pop of color that’s not clownish. Plus, they feel so silky going on. ” -Amy Keller Laird, Deputy Editor/Beauty Director, Allure

–

“There are so many great products to get excited about in 2011! I’m loving Physicians Formula’s Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner Serum. It’s a liquid liner and serum that promotes longer looking lashes and stays put all day long – plus it comes in great shades. I’m also obsessed with OPI’s Black Shatter Coat. You can apply it over any nail polish to create the coolest leopard-like pattern. It’s instant nail art! A hot at-home hair color trend? Foam! L’Oréal Paris’s Sublime Mousse by Healthy Look is great. The mousse-like texture makes for easy, no-mess application and an even (and gorgeous!) result. ” -Holly Carter, Beauty Director, People StyleWatch

–

“The one thing I’m excited to see launch is the new Calypso St. Barth line for Target. A few years ago, we saw the emergence of masstige – which was a category of pricey drugstore products attempting to be luxe. But capsule collections at affordable prices are such a smarter way to go. I remember splurging on my first Calypso Mimosa candle…and then splurging further on a trip to St. Barths, where I stocked up on fragrance, candles and caftans from the brand. I am counting the milliseconds until the collection launches – and I’ll fill my cart with as many as I can fit – without credit card remorse.” – Polly Blitzer, Editor-in-Chief, BeautyBlitz.com (editor’s note: Calypso St Barth for Target hits stores on May 1)

–

“The product I am MOST excited for in 2011 is Stila’s new All Over Shimmer Duo in Kitten- the finish is amazing and glowy, it works as all-over highlighter or with a wet brush it makes an amazing shadow in a pinch (such as when my beloved Kitten shadow inevitably runs out on me and I end up in a panic because I can’t leave the house without it!)” -Jenn Falik, Beauty & Style Expert

Amy is the woman behind the awards – she and her co-workers scrutinize, compile, and well..hoard…all in the name of beauty. The testing never ends. In fact, the awards and selection process have become a family affair for her – Amy jokes in the issue that “Grady (her husband) was really lobbying for a face wash that didn’t make our cut.” Read on to find out which cleanser that was!

Can you talk about the awards in general this year (how/if they were different from years past, how many products you received, if there were any surprises, etc.)

Every year we evaluate the categories to make sure they’re still relevant, or if we should add something new. This year, we added a section for sensitive skin—in the past, we’d just recommended a cleanser and moisturizer, but this year we have a scrub, peel, wrinkle cream, and more. We also increased the number of product recommendations for African-American women, and we blew out our “Cheap Thrills” section—inexpensive stuff that really performs—into a three-page story. Everything in it is under $9.

Which product category were you most excited about getting your hands on this year?

I love to test mascara—and so does the staff. You get instant gratification; you immediately see the change it’s made in your lashes.

Which product category causes the most debate among Allure editors?

Fragrance! It’s always the most hotly debated category. One person’s favorite is another’s “cleaning solution.” Our conference room and my office reeks for days on end when we’re testing scent. I won’t even notice how potent my office smells until someone comes in waving her hand over her nose while muttering “P-U!”

The issue highlights 12 true innovations that are listed in the big breakthrough section. The products seemed to truly knock the socks off of some of the most experienced editors who have seen it all. What does it take for a product to receive a breakthrough award?

It’s quite rigorous. The product has to do something no other product has done before, and if it’s making strong claims, they have to be backed up by clinical tests. We consult cosmetic chemists and dermatologists, who review these tests to make sure they’re legitimate and were conducted properly.

The Best of Beauty Issue has brought previously-unknown products to new levels. This year, what do you think that product will be?

Everyone should try the Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Stain Pencil. It gives your lips a stained look, but it doesn’t feel drying. And it comes in a chubby marker-style applicator, so it’s not drippy or messy.

OK, spill it – which face wash was Grady lobbying for? (Editor’s note: Grady is Amy’s husband who writes his own beauty/grooming blog on GQ.com – Beauty Tested, Beast Approved.)

Ha! He became a little obsessed with Shiseido’s Future Solution LX Extra Rich Cleansing Foam. When a man refers to a cleanser as “luxurious,” you know it’s doing something right. He blogged about it on GQ.com – http://tinyurl.com/3ajdwqa.

Is there a product from the awards that is loved by both the beauty and the beast? (Editor’s note: Amy’s husband’s GQ Blog is entitled Beauty Tested, Beast Approved.)

Beauty and the beast are both huge fans of La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid, which won for Facial Sunscreen. It’s a liquid sunscreen that’s so light, you barely feel like you have it on—yet it’s so protective with good UVA-blocking ingredients and an SPF 60. The beast brought it with him on a recent boat trip down the Mississippi and Missouri rivers (very manly)—and, of course, no burn.

There are always a few stand-outs/stars/favorites from the awards. Which products are those this year?

So many standouts, but if I had to pick a couple new ones, I’d go with: 1. Cover Girl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner—this stuff stays put. It’s really smooth, too. 2. Physicians Formula Organic Wear Eye Makeup Remover Pads. I am so lazy at night and rarely want to exert the effort to take off my makeup. These are easy and don’t make my eyes burn. 3. Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Volupté Gloss Stick in Tangy Orange—love, love, love. Beautiful sheer tangerine shade, with a moisturizing balm feel. 4. Rene Furterer Acanthe Perfect Curls Curl Enhancing Fluid: I have tried every curl enhancer out there on my waves. This is the best—it’s a light lotion that really defines and shapes without turning crunchy.

Full disclosure – I tried the Lancome Oscillation PowerFoundation and didn’t like it. So much so that I never tried it again. I love the idea of it, but to me it seemed gimmicky. According to the issue, I should give it another try, yes?

It takes a little getting used to, but it really can give you long-lasting, mineral-foundation coverage that’s not cakey. Definitely give it another whirl.

I’m a peel/mask girl, but am a bit intimated by the Advanced Home Actives Brazilian Peel Professional Strength Facial Treatment because of my sensitive skin. How can the peel be that effective, yet usable
for any and all skin types?

That’s why it’s a breakthrough! The company found a way to use such a high amount of glycolic acid in a safe way. Our super-sensitive-skinned editors were amazed that it didn’t irritate their skin.

Long, dramatic lashes from Almay? The Beauty Bug didn’t believe one word of that either. After all, they are like the Keds of the makeup industry – they will always be there in the background playing it very safe with very natural, barely-there products. Until now.

So, how does this product actually work? Does it use a “dial up technology” that only scientists would understand? Keep guessing. Does the “magic” have something to do with the wand? Try again. The answer may be hard to uncover because Almay themselves keeps it a mystery. There’s not even an explanation on their website under the “how it works” link. Ladies, it’s simple. Behind the smoke and the mirrors it’s nothing more than the inner cavity expanding as you dial up the mascara (or compressing as you dial down), allowing for more product to be deposited on the brush. Therefore, when the dial is turned up to 3, the cavity is at its widest, and the maximum amount of product coats the brush.

Details aside, an adjustable mascara housed in one convenient tube is a pretty novel idea. It sparked this beauty junkies interest. One-up for Almay. But, does it work? The short answer is yes (and Allure agrees with The Beauty Bug – the mascara recently won a “Cheap Thrill” award in its Best of Beauty issue). Turning the dial up all the way to 3 yields some solid, serious, statement lashes. The second setting results in lashes that are a bit tamer with just a little less volume, and The Beauty Bug most often just skips over the first setting – which simply defines. It’s your standard daytime mascara.

In the end, it’s a little bit gimmicky, but a lot of fun and a great value.

Almay’s One Coat Dial Up Mascara is available at your local CVS for around $9.

Disclosure: The Beauty Bug paid $8.49 at CVS!

The Beauty Bug could talk to Kristin all day. Editorial Projects Director at Allure, Kristin has been at Allure for thirteen years and has worked on every Best of Beauty issue – just a never-ending wealth of beauty knowledge. The two bonded over their favorite products and their mutual love for The TODAY Show (see Kristin’s recent segment on The TODAY Show here). Here’s the scoop on this year’s awards:

BB: Can you speak a bit about the awards as whole this year? How did they evolve from last year? How many products did you receive to test this year?

KP: There weren’t a whole lot changes from last year to this year. Our goal is to always try the full expanse of all the products women use. We were, however, a bit more cognizant of prices this year. This isn’t a time where women are rushing out to buy expensive products. If we were very close on 2 products, we’d most likely choose the less expensive one, and the other more expensive one went in our ‘Best Splurges’ section.

Our panel is comprised of our Allure beauty staff and experts who tested over 2,500 products. The experts, dermatologists, researchers, and independent cosmetic chemists help to verify that the science behind all of these products is legit.

BB: When does the process start? Are there any qualifications or specifications for brands submitting their products?

KP: We’re never not working on the awards. In fact, we’ve already started to work on the next year’s – the editors have begun building their list of products they want to try and calling them in. The heavy duty testing goes from February through August. There are no specifications or qualifications – a beauty brand can submit whatver they want.

After the heavy duty testing, the battling begins. Of course sometimes there are clear winners, but when there’s not, our editors are passionate and fight for their favorites. I recall arguments by the copy machine and in the hallways. “Why didn’t you like my mascara?” But of course, majority rules.

BB: What’s your own personal testing method?

KP: I split my body into quadrants and test a lot of products at once. I’ve learned to try things in stages. I try a product on a small area of my body, and if I like it and it passes the test, I use it as its meant to be used. If I’m testing a macara, I’ll put it on one eye, and if it’s not clumping or sweating down my face, I’ll use it on both eyes.

BB: Last year No Frizz by Living Proof was the star product that garnered the most buzz. What is this years star product?

KP: I would have to say St. Tropez self tanners and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Color are the products that are getting the most attention. St. Trpoez because everyone woman that self-tans know that they can be the bain of her existence due to the streakiness and smell (and St. Tropez does neither), and the Insta-Dri Nail Color because of its durability and drying properties. Natalie Morales from the TODAY Show loved Uptempto Plum, and I even got a call from my mom asking me to send her some! I sent her to the drugstore.

BB: The Orlando Pita + T3 Renew Dry Conditioner intrigues The Beauty Bug, though She’s not a dry shampoo user. She even read that one of your contributors said that this product changed her life. What is it about this product?

KP: This product took a little while to understand, but it’s amazing. If you have static issues, or you have those little unruly fly-aways that form a halo around your head, get this product. If you have thin hair, but you don’t want to load on the conditioner because you don’t want to weigh your hair down, use this. It really softens hair without weighing it down. Amazing.

BB: What are your thoughts on the latest Latisse news that broke in the recently? (Latisse was included in the issue as one of the big beauty breakthroughs.)

KP: It’s not the first time that a company is challenged by for its ad claims – its happened many times before and it will happen again. All of the dermatolgists we spoke to said that it wasn’t a concern for women using it soley for lash growth, just for those applying the drops directly into their eyes for Glaucoma treatmemt. Our experts saw no cases of discoloration when the product was used for cosmetic reasons.

Personally, I love Peter Thomas Roth’s Lashes to Die For Night Time Eyelash Conditioning Treatment. It’s fabulous – since I’ve started using it my lashes look like they are fake. yes the tube is $125, but The bottle lasts forever. Just make sure you keep up with it and use it every night. If you don’t, after your lengthened lashes fall out, the new ones that grow in aren’t as long.

BB: Speaking of lashes, each of the mascaras that made the cut this year are all drug store mascaras. Did this have anything to do with the economy?

KP: Nope – nothing to do with the economy because department store mascaras are only in the $20-$30 range, it’s just because we are in love with these mascaras. With all this Latisse talk, everyone is craving big, giant lashes. Drug store mascaras have come a long way and now all the brushes and the formulas are amazing. This is one product women don’t have to splurge on.

BB: Everyone has their favorite/stand-out products. What are yours?

KP: No Frizz. In all the years that I’ve been here at Allure, I’ve been searching for that holy grail product and last year I finally found it. It’s the only product that allows me to ride the subway in the worst summer humidity and still retain my hair style. I wish I could bathe in it!

I also love Cover Girl Lash Blast. The big fat brush with the short, nubby bristles is the best. The formula never flakes or migrates on to my face. Cover Girl Lip Stain is another one of my favorites. A lot of the colors are pretty deep – I go for the lighters ones. I love Sassy Mauve (#420). It’s the shade of my lips, only a little rosier. It’s not drying and it doesn’t cause flaking.

DuWop Circle Block is a two-step concealer that I love. You apply a balm first that moisturizes and tints followed by the concealer. The texture is great and it doesn’t crease.

BB: The Beauty Bug is always plagued by creasing concealer because She applies it to Her lids to rid them of their reddish color.

KP: Quick tip for you because I have the same problem. I use Bobbi Brown’s cream eye shadow in Suede because I have the bruised eyelid look as well. It tints my eyelid color into one that I actually like.

BB: Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion seemed like just another bottle on shelves. But, on the contrary, it’s HUGELY significant. How big is this for the beauty world? Explain its significance.

KP: It’s hugely significant, and in working with our chemists and scientists, we substantiated the claims. It’s this simple. Use the products once every 3 days for 2 weeks and your hair will be 1o times stronger. It’s all about the science and the discovery of a new polymer found in a plant. None of the experts that we spoke to had every seen anything like it. The polymer forms a cast around wet hair to cushion it and prevent it from breakage. As hair dries, he polymer shrinks and leaves behind conditioning silicone. It can help aging hair; it can help colored hair. There’s nothing worse than seeing hair break off and this can now prevent that. It can help with length, and potentially thickness as well.

The Allure Best Of Beauty issue is on sale now!

Everyone knows Allure is THE beauty bible, so when the mag declares its picks for the best beauty products of the year, women everywhere read and then shop. And rightfully so. This year editors tested 2, 478 products and narrowed the list down to 182. Not an easy task.

Determining their Best of Beauty is a process that takes nearly half a year. No product is left untouched. Editors take part in a beauty Olympics of sorts to find the best of the best. The Beauty Bug had a chance to talk with Allure Beauty Director Amy Keller to learn some more about the awards and the process. This year marks her second year of spear-heading the initiative.

BB: Explain the process a bit more. How many people are on your panel? Does each person test all 2,478 items or is it broken down into categories?

AK: The panel consists of about 10 people – it’s the core beauty department. We use other staffers to fill in the holes – staffers with specific problems like frizzy hair, etc. And yes, we each get and test all 2,478 but the pile is weeded through in the beginning. Some are instantly disqualified because of their texture or their smell and we go from there.

BB: What about the actual voting process – how does that work?

AK: We have actual ballots that are tabulated. After the tabulation, the beauty departments meets and discusses the results – sometimes there’s a tie so we talk it out. The we bring the results to Linda, who has already voted herself. Everything is as scrutinized and scientific as possible!

BB: You had 59 products in your shower at one time?! How did you deal? Was there a method to your madness?

AK: The overflow of products was completely insane and luckily I just moved from a one room loft to a bigger apartment – but for 4-5 months my entry was was completely full of products and my husband and I were tripping over boxes. I was constantly recycling! But yes, I did have a method of sorts. Every morning I tried to try something new – products that wouldn’t overlap. Almost everyday I was trying a new moisturizer, concealer, mascara, shampoo, etc and then just restocking the next day. Constantly restocking the vanity…

BB: You had a panel of doctor’s to provide expert advice about ingredients, but when it came to testing the creams, how long did you use them?

AK: Regular moisturizers we used for about a week to ensure we liked the texture and the smell, and that they wore well throughout the day. For anti-wrinkle creams we worked with the doctors to narrow the products down based on ingredients and used each of those for a couple of weeks.

BB: Has The Best of Beauty issue ever brought a no-name product to a new level?

AK: This year we broke product news when we introduced our readers to No Frizz by Living Proof. The product is truly amazing! The Beauty Bug predicts that since Allure has called attention to and brought this product to the forefront of the market, it will certainly reach a new level! The Beauty Bug will certainly be purchasing it!

BB: Did any products that you really liked not make the cut?

AK: One fragrance that I liked didn’t make it on the list, but fragrance is always the hardest category because it’s so polarizing. You either love it or hate it. Other than that, all of the products are universal.

BB: You said that you loved Lauren Hutton’s First Kiss Cheek Stain and Lip Balm, were there any other stand-out favorites?

AK: I love Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Volupté Lipstick in Provocative Pink. It’s the prefect lipstick for fair skin. It’s not too pink, but it’s not so nude either so it looks like a concealer. It’s a nude lipstick that actually looks good in real life – not just on the runway. I also really love Lancome’s Color Design Blush. The past 2 years BECCA’s Creme Blush has won, but I just love the texture of the Lancome blush – it’s smooth, and easy to blend. It’s not oily and it won’t fade.

BB: How have the awards evolved year to year?

AK: Last year we introduced a few new categories – natural products, splurges, quick fixes and problem solvers. This year we kept natural products and splurges and added men’s products, due to the influx of men going to spas, and cheap thrills, due to economic conditions. Our list is always a result of what’s going on in the market. This year we also went a bit more in depth and gave recommendations for specific skin types and tones – like lipstick shades for medium and dark skin and moisturizers for dry and sensitive skin. We actually went around the office and tried certain colors on all skin tones.

BB: Mascaras have changed quite a bit recently from Lancome and Estee’s vibrating mascaras to Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes. The Beauty Bug was a bit surprised that neither made it on the list. Can you explain?

AK: While they may be great mascaras, they aren’t universal products. They are too specialized to be the one mascara we call out – they are definitely for a particular consumer.

BB: While none of the newly released black lip glosses will probably never land a spot on the Allure Best of Beauty list – what are you thoughts on the glosses and the trend? Will you be wearing or trying to wear it?

AK: Some of the black glosses look kind of gray and ashy on, but I haven’t yet tried the Yves Saint Laurent one, which looks really patent-leather black. Last night I had an event and thought how cool it would be if I were wearing shiny black lips–but in real life, I’d be more apt to layer it with a red lipstick or something so it didn’t look too vampy.

The Beauty Bug had the pleasure of meeting Allure Beauty Directory, Amy Keller, at the first TotalBeauty blogger advisory board meeting in NY last month. The Beauty Bug, Amy, and other fellow beauty bloggers chatted over edamame, tea and bento boxes and gossiped about Britney (and the poor Allure editor that she stood up), and the latest and greatest drug-store deals. The typical questions were asked about the copious amounts of products that Amy receives on a daily basis; and visions of cabinet after cabinet overflowing with products filled the bloggers heads. With a desire to learn a little bit more about Amy and her fabulous job, The Beauty Bug wrote her, and she was kind enough to respond. Read on to discover the best in beauty from 2007, a look ahead to 2008, and how lipstick has overtaken gloss…

BB: According to many of the girls in The Beauty Bug’s circle, you have the best job in the world. What is your favorite part of the job?

AK: I love my job! I didn’t even know beauty editors existed when I moved to NYC from Missouri nine years ago. My favorite parts of the job include getting a glimpse of what’s going to be on the shelves months before it actually is; seeing ideas turn into full, beautifully shot (thanks to our creative director!) and thoroughly reported stories (Allure has the room to really flesh out the details of a topic, which are always the most interesting part); and having a strong relationship with the top dermatologists and chemists in the country. The science side of beauty products and treatments has always fascinated me.

BB: Like every girl, The Beauty Bug is sure your favorite products change weekly. What’s your mascara and gloss of the moment?

AK: At the moment, I’m pretty obsessed with Max Factor Volume Couture mascara. Makeup artist Pat McGrath extolled its values to Allure on more than one occasion, so I had to try it–and now I’m hooked. Favorite lipgloss now is TheBalm BalmShelter SPF 17 Tinted Gloss in Girl Next Door--an ideal pink that’s not too sheer. I also have to give a shoutout to M.A.C. Mattene Lipstick in Powersuit–it is the perfect red, with a touch of orangeso it looks really modern. It stays on for hours but because it’s a mix between matte and satin finishes, it goes on really smoothly and doesn’t crack on your lips. I always get tons of compliments when I wear it. It’s really bright, though, so I just wear mascara and a touch of blush with it.

BB: Sometimes, The Beauty Bug falls asleep with Her makeup on and forgets to put on Her nightly serum. What’s your worst beauty habit?

AK: I wish I was better at removing my makeup at night, too. I’m much better when I have cleansing wipes around. I love the Olay wet cleansing cloths because you can use them to remove mascara, too, without your eyes stinging–a lazy girl’s dream. I also let manicurists cut my cuticles once in a while, though I always feel guilty as soon as I agree to it.

BB: What were the top 3 beauty trends in 2007? Top 3 products?

AK: Top three trends in 2007: The return of lipstick (mainly true red and hot pink, but the fact that lipstick overtook gloss was a big thing in the beauty world); the explosion of natural and organic products from big, traditionally more mainstream companies like Origins and Physicians Formula; and the bob! I’m proud to say I had a bob in the fall or 2006–a bob with bangs, even–and maybe even before Posh had hers. The top three products: RevaléSkin Coffeeberry products are huge news in the skin field–dermatologists can’t say enough good things about the antioxidant powers of coffeeberry. Maybelline New York Define-A-Lash Mascara–the flexible wand with rubber bristles is amazing. No clumping at all. And the finish is nice and glossy. And Prada Infusion d’Iris fragrance. It is so lovely–not too flowery or girly, a little powdery, sensual but not overwhelming. Love it.

BB: Looking ahead to 2008, any sneak previews of products and/or trends
that you can tell us about?

AK: The mineral-makeup trend continues in 2008, with launches from more major drugstore and department-store lines. You also will see the first at-mass cleanser with SPF. Marc Jacobs Daisy fragrance has the cutest ancillary product coming out in the first few months of ’08. And glitter! Yes, it’s back–and gorgeous this time around (check out our February issue!).

BB: What’s the most underrated beauty product?

AK: The most underrated beauty product is probably a good blush. Even if you’re not wearing lipstick or mascara, a little color makes you look presentable. My latest blush favorite are the cream blushes from Lancome–they have a great texture that’s really soft and blendable.

BB: What’s the most common mistake that women make when applying makeup?

AK: Applying too much concealer to a zit! I’d rather just see the zit than a crusted-up lump of concealer.

BB: The Beauty Bug runs home after work everyday and one of the first things She does is wash her face. She also can’t go a day without washing her hair. What’s one part of your beauty regimen that you can never give up?

AK: Sunscreen! I can’t go outside without it.

BB: You’re stuck on a desert island – what 3 products do you bring with you?

AK: Sunscreen, again, tops the list. Probably Neutrogena Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 45 or 55 because you can wear it on your face or body, it sinks right in without leaving a greasy feel, and it has Helioplex, which I believe is the best sun protection out there (outside of maybe La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Sunblock SPF 60, although this version still isn’t FDA-approved). Or maybe I’d go for the Olay Definity foaming moisturizer with SPF so I’d stay young-looking for years (but lack of a mirror and companions might negate that fact). I’d probably bring those Olay cleansing wipes, too–a huge stash so I could feel clean. And lip balm–if only the Dermalogica AGE Smart Renewal Lip Complex had sunscreen, because it feels and tastes so great. Oh, and antibacterial hand sanitizer because I’m kind of a germ-phobe–I’m loving the new Vicks Foaming Hand Sanitizer because it smells good (light cucumber scent) and actually leaves hands feeling moisturized, not dry and tight, once you’re done using it. Oops, that’s too many things.

BB: When was the last time you went into a drugstore/Sephora, etc. and bought a product for yourself? What did you buy?

AK: I always forget to bring makeup remover with me when I’m traveling, so I often buy that at the drugstore–usually I get Maybelline Expert Eyes Oil Free liquid remover because I’ve been using it for years.

BB: Is it hard being loyal to products when receive new ones on a daily basis?

AK: I stay loyal to beauty products until something better comes along. I might put my old staples on the back burner for a while, but I come back to them when there’s a lull.

BB: Which celebrity has the best beauty style?

AK: I like that Gwen Stefani wears lipstick all the time and that she’s kept her complexion naturally pale–I met her at the launch event for her fragrance, and her skin is flawless. I like that Selma Blair is daring with her haircuts and color. There’s something about the messy smoky eyes that the Olsen twins often wear that I love. It’s disheveled but cool-looking.

In the October Issue of Allure, in her letter from the Editor, Linda Wells writes about a business lunch with the owner of a cosmetics company. Wells recalls the executive asking her to empty the contents of her handbag onto the table to prove a point – that women don’t use the products in their purses. “No one does anymore”, he claimed. Wells debunked his theory by presenting him with a blush that was worn down to the metal case.

Well Wells, even though you did happen to have that handy blush compact to pull out to quiet the cosmetics executive, The Beauty Bug tends to agree with him. She believes that women rarely ever use the numerous products that they store in their purses, and yes, they buy new products long before they are finished with their current ones. And brand loyalty? What’s that? The Beauty Bug just wants a mascara that will give Her maximum length and a high-shine, non-stick gloss. She doesn’t care what label or name it bears. It’s nothing new. The light, shimmery summer collections that were just purchased 2-3 months ago and have barely been used are now being replaced dramatic fall colors which were purchased last year and not fully used. It’s the way beauty-addicts work. It’s what makes The Beauty Bug, and fellow beauty-addicts, happy.

As The Beauty Bug combed through the September issue of Allure (She waited at her mailbox for this issue – you have no idea how excited She was to get it), L’Oreal’s new Skin Genesis Daily Treatment Serum Concentrate caught her eye. The expert consulted, the director of the Institute of Anti-Aging Research in Virginia Beach, said the product it “great for young women with early signs of aging because it has both reparative and preventative benefits and the Allure staffer who tried it out said that she liked the texture and it softened her fine lines after just a few uses.

After reading that, and seeing that all of the L’Oreal Skin Genesis products were on sale at Walgreens for 25% off, the Beauty Bug was sold. On Sunday afternoon when She should have been moving (The Beauty Bug and The Beauty Bug Boyfriend just purchased their first condo – no doubt She will be installing a beauty closet soon), she made her way to Walgreen because getting this new product was clearly the priority.

She quickly located it on the shelf (the packaging the very sleek) and headed to the check-out counter. The extremely talkative and cheerful 60-something cashier raved about the product – she had just come back from a local L’Oreal class where she learned about it. The cashier, we’ll call her Tabby, then proceeded to instruct The Beauty Bug on how to open the serum – nothing more than a slight counter-clockwise motion (a trick The Beauty Bug surely would have never figured out). While demonstrating, she awkwardly twisted her wrist – which already had a brace on it, a result of racing her cat from the kitchen to the living room Tabby explained. While The Beauty Bug kept a smile on her face, She was trying to take in every detail so She could tell The Beauty Bug Boyfriend about her odd encounter – the weird cat-lady Tabby who probably shared the serum with her cat.

The Beauty Bug exited Walgreens with a smile, happy that she had opted to go to Walgreens instead of her normal drug-store favorite, CVS. Surely, the trip wouldn’t have been half as interesting….
