The beauty world is buzzing blooming over Drew Barrymore’s latest venture, (no, she’s not just hanging out being quirky, but for a good laugh check out the video below) Flower Beauty. The line touts that it’s ”formulated with the same quality ingredients found in department store luxury brands, but sold for a fraction of the price” ($12.98-$6.98).  One standout product from the line is the mascara. The former COVERGIRL has put her on twist on it with her 3-in-1 magic wand offering 3 different brushes.  The Beauty Bug went to Her local Walmart and snapped the photos below.

The Beauty Bug is putting some muscle behind Her makeup this weekend with MAC’s fierce and feisty STRENGTH collection on counters now. She first told you about it here and will be bringing the below look with Her this weekend as She escapes to Cape Cod for a little winter weekend getaway.

The collection is the perfect way to start off the year  - an excellent vibe and theme to set the tone for a fresh start. It’s balanced yet striking; dramatic yet muted. The cool quad is rich and smokey and the lip offerings bring just the amount of color needed to brighten up a winter’s day. The blush, Taupe Shape, provides the perfect swipe of sun on Her cheeks, but isn’t too overbearing or bronzed for Her pale skin.

Products include the Inner Strength Eye Shadow Quad, Taupe Shape Blush, and Absolute Power Lipstick.

Beauty Editor Must-Haves for 2013

Posted: January 17th, 2013, by The Beauty Bug

nail glow2As She does most every year, The Beauty Bug checked in with some of the top editors and experts to see what products they were most looking forward to in 2013. Make sure to put these products on your ‘must-buy’ list:

“I’m loving all the bright pops of color for spring so it’s a tie. Kevin Murphy’s new Color bug in NEON yellow is rad, it’s a rinsable hair chalk that will look so cool and fresh on people with jet black hair like my daughter.  Tarte’s glamazon lip color in Fierce is my current obsession for me – the name says it all. It’s a matte shade that’s not drying and you can put it on without a mirror, something about the formulation and shape of the bullet makes it foolproof, not only that it gives your lips the perfect hot corally orange/red hue that’s the newest bright lip shade  for spring. Every time I wear it people ask me what it is. SERIOUSLY. My other fave find is Christian Dior’s Nail Glow. It appears hot pink in the bottle, you paint it on and it goes on clear, again foolproof , when it dries your nails look pinker, brighter, cleaner, shinier. It’s a magic trick.” - Elaine D’Farley, SELF’s Beauty Director

“There are tons of great beauty finds to choose from in 2013. I am excited about Clinique’s Moisture Surge CC Cream Hydrating Colour Corrector Broad Spectrum SPF 30 out in April. Think of Color Correcting cream (CC) as the new BB cream and this one is particularly special. It hydrates skin, neutralizes yellowness, redness and ashiness andprotects with SPF 30. It’s truly a multitasking complexion perfector. And speaking of complexion perfectors, NARS Amande Radiant Creamy Concealer (out in Feb) is my new makeup must-have. The texture is so blendable, the wand is super-easy to use and it makes my complexion look absolutely flawless. I also
love SK-II’s LXP Ultimate Revival Essence. It’s a facial water that’s applied after cleansing and before moisturizing and it helps hydrate and brighten skin. I even use it on my hands!” – Holly Carter, StyleWatch Beauty Director

Essie Sleek Stick Spring 2013 Nail Wrap Collection-22“The iconic nail brand Essie is coming out with their first nail appliqués in 2013, which will surely impress. Also, Shu Uemura is coming out with a hair perfume called Essence Absolue Nourishing Fragrance, which is infused with oil to calm frizz and control flyways, so not only will your hair smell great, but it will look gorgeous too.”- Anna Jimenez, Senior Editor of Video & Interactive for NewBeauty

“I’m looking forward to Chanel’s spring makeup collection, Printemps Precieux de Chanel. I got an early glimpse from the  brand and drooled over the range of soft, feminine pinks. I’m happy to move past severe, unwearable colors. Oh, and the nail polish that’s bound to be wait-listed? Chanel Le Vernis Nail Lacquer in Fracas, a limited-edition hot pink.” -Polly Blitzer, Founder, Beauty Blitz Media

“I’m looking forward to Armani Beauty’s new bi-phase makeup remover. It looks
like a gorgeous sculpture on my vanity and its oil-based formula won’t wrest the glue from my lash extensions. ” – Amber Katz, BeautyBloggingJunkie.com

“I’m still totally into great nail polishes–and fun, subtle nail art. So I’m super excited about some of the new launches from Nails Inc including the Bling It On Black Leather & Skulls set. The polish creates a cool, black-leather finish and then you can glue on these tiny little silver skulls. So edgy and fun–I love it!” -Alyssa Kolsky Hertzig, TheSparklyLife.com

COVERGIRL’S Jumbo Gloss Balm

Posted: January 15th, 2013, by The Beauty Bug

300Beauties – COVERGIRL’S new Jumbo Gloss in Scarlett Twist (#250) is giving The Beauty Bug life on this drab winter day in Boston. The new twist-up, non-sticky, crayon-esque balm is one of The Beauty Bug’s favorite new products this month. It’s pigmented (coverage is buildable and can range from sheer to medium), moisturizing and doesn’t stain. It lasts for about 2-3 hours and after that lips are left soft with the faintest hue of color.  The balms are infused with Shea and Mango butters, but on those days when it feels like She’s living in the arctic, The Beauty Bug loves to layer it over Carmex for extra protection.

Some colors are more sheer than others  - The Beauty Bug picks are the ones that add a bit more punch to your pout. She recommends Scarlett Twist, Berry Twist and Ruby Twist. Sheerer colors include Cocoa Twist, Plum Twist, Blush Twist and Mauve Twist.

And buyers beware, you can’t just buy one!

COVERGIRL’s Jumbo Gloss Balms are available at mass-market retail outlets now for $7.49.

Golden Globes Glamour: Get the Look with L’Oreal Paris

Posted: January 13th, 2013, by The Beauty Bug

The countdown to the red carpet is on at The Beauty Bug household and to prepare for the big event, She recently met with Boston makeup artist extraordinaire, Dani Wagner to recreate a staple red carpet look- red lips and a cat eye. It’s a look so simple, yet sometimes hard to recreate. So sophisticated, yet also bold.  L’Oreal Paris makeup artist, Billy B sums it up well - “The red carpet is no place for natural – it’s a place to make a statement. I expect to see a return to full, unapologetic glamour. I predict lots of rich black liquid eyeliner and classic matte red mouths. Think Sophia Loren.”

To create the look, The Beauty Bug and Dani used L’Oreal Paris’s Colour Shine Stain in Endless Red and L’Oreal Paris’s Super Slim Liner by Infallible.

“The cat eye can sometimes be tricky to do on yourself, so first trace a line with an angled brush using a black shadow as a liner, and then go over it with L’Oreal Paris’s Super Slim Liner by Infallible, “said Dani as she helped The Beauty Bug draw her cat eye.

“I love the angle of the tip of the Shine Stain – it fits right into the bow of the lip perfectly, which allows you to easily trace it over your lip line creating a flawless look“, says Dani.

The standout product here for The Beauty Bug is the Colour Caresse Shine Stain. It’s a stain that thinks it’s a gloss – talk about the best of both worlds. Identity crisis or not, it has potential holy grail status. It’s staying power is impressive and will get you through drinks and into dinner, the color pay-off is superb and did The Beauty Bug mention that it’s a moisturizing stain?! Major oxymoron, The Beauty Bug knows (think: jumbo shrimp), but it’s just a wonder to behold! Any product junkie will need them in every single shade. While it’s only January, The Beauty Bug predicts that the product will end up on a lot of ‘best of 2013′ lists. It’s that good.

The L’Oreal Paris Colour Caresse Shine Stain ($9.99) and The Super Slim Liner ($8.95) are both available now at mass food and drug retailers.

Baring it all(most): Revlon’s Nearly Naked Foundation

Posted: January 10th, 2013, by The Beauty Bug

nearlyToday The Beauty Bug experienced a whole new naked with Revlon’s Nearly Naked Foundation. It’s a great everyday foundation that’s refreshingly light with buildable (light-medium) coverage.  The Beauty Bug recommends it for those “less is more” days. You know the ones She means – when you don’t want to feel like you’re carrying a layer of cake around on your face, but still want to make sure you’re not walking around foundation-less, scaring little children. Nearly Naked is the perfect fresh-faced happy medium – like your tinted moisturizer’s more experienced, wiser sister.  The Beauty Bug applies 2 generous applications with a slightly damp sponge to get that natural, yet dewy look. Skin doesn’t get oily mid-day and it blends like your best friend.

The formula, available in 16 shades, reads like a skincare product. It contains SPF 20, green tea, black tea, oatmeal and jojoba to help maintain skin tone and texture.

The only downside – there’s no pump so you’re forced to attempt to get just the right amount out of the bottle and because of it’s light nature, some of the time, you’re going to get a bit more product than you bargained for.

Revlon’s Nearly Naked is available at drug and mass retailers nationwide and on Revlon.com for $9.99.

Makeup Artist Must-Haves: Dani Wagener

Posted: January 8th, 2013, by The Beauty Bug

She’s painted the pouts of Anna Wintour, Oscar-Winning director Kathryn Bigelow, Jenny McCarthy and of course, The Beauty Bug. Here are Dani Wagener’s  favorite products that she always has within reach!

FRESH Black Tea Serum
Prepping the skin properly is what I consider to be the single most important step in makeup application. After cleansing, I love to prep the skin with a lightweight serum like this one from Fresh. It hydrates instantly and doesn’t leave a greasy residue.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Cream Eyeshadow
One question I hear all of the time from all of my clients is, “Is this eyeshadow going to crease? Will it last?” MAKE UP FOR EVER’S Aqua Cream’sAfter prepping the skin for makeup properly, using highly waterproof products around the eye is incredibly important. I love using Aqua Creams as a sheer base under eye shadow.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Waterproof Aqua Black Eyeshadow/Liner
This creamy, highly waterproof formula stays on.. and on. Great for lining the inner and outer eyelids. This is a staple product that is always in my kit.

Ardell Dura Lash Naturals (Individual Short Black)
Everyone in Boston knows about my love affair with lashes and this stems from my angst towards clumpy, thick looking mascara. Many people don’t realize how incredibly versatile and natural-looking lashes can be. Adding 10 lashes to each eye creates volume, not length, resulting in a larger but still soft looking eyes. Adding 20 or more that vary in length can redefine eye shape, and create an instand red carpet look.

Shu Uemura Brushes
I’m so lucky to have these in my arsenal after my 5 year stint with shu uemura. Hands down they are best brushes available, but definitely a splurge. I couldn’t live without them. Nothing blends like a kolinsky brush….

AmorePacific  Moisture Bound Skin Energy Hydration Delivery System
I love using this lightweight mist on skin before or after makeup to lock in hydration.

AERIN Beauty Rose Lip Conditioner
A confessed lip balm addict…I start every makeup application with a touch of lip balm to hydrate the lips during the makeup process … this new one from AERIN is always in my personal bag.

BECCA Ultimate Gloss
I love these super shiny glosses for special occasion makeup. They are long lasting and creamy, and the shades are a great way to incorporate a pop of color to a little black dress.

TEMPTU PRO S/B Foundation
This airbrush foundation is the key to long-lasting makeup and a perfect choice for brides. When done properly, it gives incredible coverage that is weightless.

Kiehls Creme de Corps Body Lotion
I love this creamy lotion to instantly hydrate the body.. it makes even the driest of skin look softer.

Kevyn Aucoin Blushes
This blush is so heavily pigmented, true to the majority of this line. Softly applied with the right brush and it will last forever. Neolita is one of my favorite shades.

Garnier Refreshing Remover Cleansing Towelettes
There’s a million different types of wipes out there, but I find these to be amongst the best. I gravitate towards products with the least amount of fragrance. These are great for cleaning up hands or refreshing the skin prior to makeup.

BECCA Serrena Bronzer
This soft mineral bronzer adds a touch of highlight and works on almost any skin tone.

Chantecaille Foundation Stick
I can’t live without this stick! It’s creamy and rich for extra buildable coverage where needed. it can be blended with fingertip or a sponge for concealing, or softly blended into the skin for sheer coverage.

The Clarisonic Electronic Face Brush
The Clarisonic is a kindler, gentler way to exfoliate the skin. I tell all of my clients who are prepping for their big day to get it, and I see a difference in their skin as a result. Getting rid of those dead skin cells also helps keep makeup on throughout the day until the very last photo is snapped.

Interview with the FAB Boston Beauty: Lilli Gordon

Posted: January 5th, 2013, by The Beauty Bug

first-aid-beauty-lilli-gordan-beauty-business-298x232Boston is known for its ball players, baked beans, and brains. Among those big brains is skin care mogul Lilli Gordon, founder of First Aid Beauty (FAB). Gordon’s story is a common one; one that many women (including The Beauty Bug) can relate to. Having sensitive skin, Gordon tested product after product only to see her skin angrily flare up. It was that occurrence that prompted operation: first aid beauty – the rescue mission for her skin. In 2009, with the help of dermatologist  Dr. Robert Buka, the no-frills, safe, effective FAB line was born.

If you aren’t intrigued yet hear this: Gordon once said that when wearing her Ultra Repair Cream, “You feel like you’re wearing La Mer, but it’s $28 for six ounces. It’s just this incredible texture.”

MAKE UP FOR EVER’S Pro Finish Foundation + Interview

Posted: December 20th, 2012, by The Beauty Bug

Lijha headshot 2

This post is dedicated to all the ladies who never thought that they would wear a compact powder foundation. You know who you are. Trust The Beauty Bug – She’s pretty sure you’ll re-think that after reading this post because MAKE UP FOR EVER is tackling talc with their new Pro Finish Foundation. Out early next year, the high-performance, unique multi-use compact foundation is an innovative formula that can be applied wet or dry. The best part about this powder? Because it’s talc-free it’s not chalky or cakey and looks completely natural on skin. The Beauty Bug recently spoke with Lijha Stewart, Pro and Media Educator for MAKE UP FOR EVER about the new release.

Q: The development of New Pro Finish was nothing short of extensive – it took 6+ years and 70+ formulations. What was it about the final product that made the grade?
A: When creating any product Dany [note: Dany Sanz is MAKE UP FOR EVER's Creator & Artistic Director] is very particular and always starts out with a set of standards.  She wanted a powder foundation that phased between wet and dry (for two different coverages and finishes), had less talc ( for a smooth feeling and soft focus diffusing effect), and provide a stable long wear on the skin. She tested 70 formulas on over 100 different women until she developed one that met the above standards.

Q: Can you please talk about the different finishes/coverage when the foundation is used wet vs dry?
A: When Pro Finish is used dry, you will achieve a matte full coverage. When it is used dry, you skin will achieve a transparent, satin finish with sheer coverage. [note: see application techniques below]

Q: I read that Pro Finish is ideal for the woman who thinks that she would never wear a compact powder foundation and this describes me to a T! Why is this ideal for both me and others who share my sentiment?
A: Pro Finish is ideal for any person because it a multi-use foundation with skin friendly ingredients like: Ximena oil, Aloe Vera, and Hyaluronic Acid. These powerhouse ingredients protect natural hydration in the skin. Plus, it is mineral oil-free [note: it is also fragrance and paraben free] and the wet dry use allows you to achieve to achieve to different coverages and finishes.

Pro Finish HRQ: Can you please talk a little bit about the patented vegetal lecithin coating?
A: This patented formula contains Vegetal Lecithin coated pigments which  help  the powder phase between wet and dry and provide a long wearing foundation.

Q: How does this foundation compare to the other MakeUpForever foundations?
A: This foundation is very unique and doesn’t compare to any foundation we currently make because of its unique proprieties. It does complement our other formulas. Pro Finish applies and wears flawlessly over our HD Foundation, Face and Body, and Mat Velvet. I also can be layered with our primers and concealers.
